On May 1, 1950, a determined
24-year-old dental technician walked into
room 346 of Downtown Saint Paul's Hamm
Building and waited for the phone to ring.
That man was Dick Hermanson and that day
signaled the beginning of Hermanson Dental
Studio.
Hermanson learned his
trade while serving in the United States
Navy and worked at two Twin Cities dental
laboratories before opening his own in 1950.
For its first five years,
Hermanson Dental Studio was a one-man lab.
The days were long and difficult; young
Hermanson's only help came from his wife,
Doris, and his father, Oscar. His first
full-time employee was hired in 1955.
Hermanson Dental Studio
stayed in the Hamm Building for nearly 16
years. As the lab expanded walls were
knocked out to obtain more space. Eventually
the lab moved to a different floor
altogether. Soon it became apparent that the
lab had outgrown its Hamm Building location
and on April 8, 1966, it moved to a spacious
office at 1404 Concordia Avenue.
At
that time, Hermanson Dental Studio had 25
employees. Over the next five years that
figure doubled and the new office became as
crowded as the old one. In November, 1972,
Steenburg Construction broke ground at 1055
East Highway 36 in Maplewood. The lab moved
to its present location during the last week
of May, 1973.
At this point, the lab's
name changed from "Hermanson Dental Studio"
to "Hermanson Dental Laboratories." The lab
sprawled over 10,000 square feet on the
second floor of the new building, the lower
floor was earmarked as rental space and
reserved for further expansion.
Only two years after
Hermanson Dental Services' move to the
Maplewood facility it had already expanded
to fill the entire building. A new model
department was added as was a porcelain to non-precious metal department. Those
expansions were followed shortly by new
repair, gnathological, Cerestore, Dicor, and
orthodontic departments. A Hermanson Dental
museum was also added.
In October 2005 Thomas Hermanson, the owner
and son of Dick Hermanson,
sold Hermanson Dental Services to Dental
Technologies Incorporated - DTI, which is
based out of Vancouver, British Columbia.
With being purchased by DTI, Hermanson
Dental is now one of 19 laboratories. With
new ownership came a name change. Hermanson
Dental Services is now known as
Hermanson - a dti company.
With over
80 employees in
our lab,
Hermanson is currently one of the largest dental laboratories in the nation.
Its success is based in its continual
commitment to quality and service. By hiring
the best technicians, purchasing the best
